Sasha’s Theory of the Horizontal Energy Economy

Well, there’s an old phrase, "Somewhere along the line, there must be the Piper to pay." But more to the point, the wastes associated with nuclear energy, no idea how to deal with them. No idea what to do with them. . . . Where are you going to put that screaming hot radiation?

We’re talking about things with half-lives of 30 thousand years. You’re not going to sit around under a swimming pool for 30-thousand years.

To fix it is an interesting problem. How are you going to get a universally understood, by an aboriginal person who has no knowledge of reading and writing, a symbol that says, "This is dangerous. Stay away from it”?

As I was beginning to...

A Celebration of the Pioneering Legacy of Sasha and Ann Shulgin: A Symposium and Book Event

On June 26 and 27, 2021, a distinguished panel of experts and psychedelic luminaries came together for a symposium to celebrate the pioneering legacy of Sasha and Ann Shulgin. The two-day virtual event marked the publication of Sasha’s new book, The Nature of Drugs, and was sponsored by San Francisco’s City Lights Bookstore in partnership with Transform Press and Synergetic Press. Videos of all five panels are now available.

Sasha in his labI’m excited that people will soon get a taste of what it was like to be in the classroom with Sasha. Coming out in early June, our new book The Nature of Drugs: History, Pharmacology, and Social Impact is based on transcripts from the fall semester of 1987 when he was teaching his popular pharmacology course at San Francisco State University.

I consider myself fortunate because I was able to sit in on some of those classes. It was a lesson in how to let information absorb really quickly. Sasha was notorious for going a bit too fast when he lectured, especially if one was not completely familiar with the subject that he was talking about.

In the book, one of the stories...

Ann Shulgin turns 90 this March 22nd, 2021!

Ann Shulgin 2020 adaptedIt’s Ann’s birthday today!

I'm very happy to announce that my mother Ann is doing really well. In fact, as you can see in the photo (taken by Tania Manning), she is creating new material to publish a third volume in the PiHKAL and TiHKAL series. She kept very busy during the difficult, yearlong Covid-19 lockdown, going through old files of long-forgotten pieces that she wrote years ago, as well as other pieces of Sasha's writing. We don't know what the new book will be called yet, as it has a long way to go before it's ready for publication. Nonetheless, it's been wonderful to gather these untold stories and put them all together.

Ann also has been working on a book due...

PiHKAL/TiHKAL Memorial Edition: Excerpt from Stan Grof’s Remembrance of Sasha Shulgin

StanGrof Psychedelics may not be the first thing you think of upon hearing the name Stanislav Grof. However, Grof’s association with Sasha Shulgin should come as no surprise considering that this renowned psychiatrist has spent more than 50 years researching the healing and transformative potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness. Grof is best known as a founding father of transpersonal psychology, which is defined as “the study of humanity’s highest potential, and with the recognition, understanding, and realization of unitive, spiritual, and transcendent states of consciousness" (Lajoie, D. H. and Shapiro, S. I. “Definitions of Transpersonal Psychology: The First...

PiHKAL/TiHKAL Memorial Edition: Evaluating the Potency of New Psychoactive Drugs

SashaNew editions are an opportunity to correct minor errors or typos and set the record straight on small issues. We are deeply indebted to Isomer Design for their careful errata in the chemistry sections of both PiHKAL and TiHKAL, which they graciously allowed us to include in the new memorial edition. These were conducted with great care—for example, mistakes are crossed out and corrections placed in line, so that alterations are clear. The result is much like a well-maintained lab notebook. Thank you, Isomer Design!

One other thoughtful emendation came from Jon Hanna, who pointed out that “The Shulgin Scale” for evaluating the potency of new psychoactive drugs was...

TiHKAL/PiHKAL Memorial Edition: Meet the Editor

JMarker photoHow did I get here?

The last thing I remember, I was saying that “someone” should put together a memorial edition of Ann and Sasha’s works PiHKAL and TiHKAL as a benefit for them, like an art retrospective or academic festschrift. Perhaps I got too specific when I suggested that they use photos from Sasha’s enormous archives or that people would love to see photos of his laboratory, or when I offhandedly suggested that surely the psychedelic luminaries of his generation would be happy to contribute.

If you say “someone” should do something too many times, people will start assuming you’re going to do it yourself. And so I find myself here two years later with...
